Touches of Autumn around our home...

I wanted to show you a few of our Autumn decorations before it is time to put up our Christmas decorations. The above picture is what you see when you first walk into our home. This is in the Sitting Room. There is a post on our craft blog that shows the stitched pictures up close.

This is in our Family room. My wonderful husband recently redid our fireplace. He replaced some old, falling apart bricks with beautiful ceramic tile. I think it turned out beautifully.

Roses in November

One of the beauties of living in Arizona is roses in November. These pictures were taken this morning in my garden. Please ignore the weeds and trimming that needs to be done! ;o)

Queen Elizabeth~ This is my favourite rose bush. I can see it while I am sitting in my Sitting Room sipping my tea.

Double Delight~ This is one of the most fragrant roses. It has won the ARS award for scent for several years.

My mystery rose. The tag said Chicago Peace, but it does not look like the pictures I have seen of a Chicago Peace.

Sweet Gifts

The Lord has given me so many sweet blessings and one of them is the gift of friendship. Recently my sweet friend Paula sent me the most wonderful package! She has been redoing her home (check it out, it is sooo beautiful!!) and knowing my love for pink and that I was redoing my kitchen with more pink she graciously passed some of her pink lovelies on to me. Elissa and I felt like it was Christmas!! ;o) Here are quite a few pictures of the lovelies. In the next few days I will post how I have used them in my home. Thanks again sweet friend!!

The Delights of Autumn

Momma & Seth at Apple Annie's pumpkin patch.

Autumn holds many delights for me and one of them is taking my children to the pumpkin patch and to the apple orchards. Today we headed an hour south to Wilcox. It is a big farming community. We went and picked up some things at the organic orchard and then headed to play at the other orchards. We all had so much fun! Seth did not like stepping in the mushy apples on the ground. It was a very gross feeling! ;o) The smell left a lot to be desired too! ;o)

A farewell to Summer tea

Elissa and I had been planning a summer tea all summer, but with being sick and having no energy it kept being put off. Elissa thought she could handle most of the preparations so she began preparing. She did a marvelous job! She made the seashell candies in the centerpiece. The "sand" is a mixture of brown sugar and white sugar. She made the sugar cookies and decorated them all by herself. She tried a few new techniques she had been reading about in the book Cookie craft. I think they turned out fabulously! I made the cloth napkins and Steve tied the string around them. So it was a cooperative effort! ;o)

We decided since most people consider Labor Day weekend to be the last weekend of the summer, we would have a farewell to summer tea.
We had a small menu. We always (!) go overboard and have a ton of leftovers so we just made a few things and did small batches of each.

Our menu consisted of:
Chicken salad sandwiches on croissants
Mushroom turnovers
Cream scones
Sugar cookies
Earl Gray Tea

We are already planning our Autumn tea! ;o) We are taking reservations if anyone wants to come have tea! ;o) Here are few pictures from our tea. They are all clickable.
As a side note, I have also updated our craft blog with two posts.

Happy Autumn!

Happy fall y'all! ;o) (you must read that with an Oklahoma twang to it! ) Today is the first day of Autumn and it is my very favorite season. I love the cooler weather, the yummy food, the changing leaves, the colors, pumpkins, apples, the different birds that are visiting our feeders. Well just about everything about this season! ;o)

Since today is Hobbit day and the first day of Autumn we had a special breakfast. Elissa made old-fashioned drop doughnuts, scrambled eggs, apple slices and a pot of Cranberry Autumn tea. Yum!

We are trying to finish decorating for Autumn and we have been planting flowers. My friend Jody brought over some yummy fall cookies, some pumpkin roll and an adorable pumpkin that has birds on it! What a lovely day. I am going to stuff a chicken with mushrooms, onion and garlic and roast it and we will have potatoes and apple crisp for dinner. I hope you are all having a lovely day!

Hey y'all! Happy September! September is one of my favorite months of the year!! I love Autumn, falling leaves, cooler weather (well everywhere else but here), pumpkins, apples, cider, ok I think you get the picture.

Sorry I have been absent for so long. I have been ill. I am extremely anemic and it has been causing havoc on my life! Any energy that I have had has been used for my family. They are also testing me for several other things. I know that I owe several of you emails and some of you Hollyhock seeds. I am working on getting that done. Thanks for understanding. I am going to try to start blogging again. I updated delightful hands earlier. I have been cross-stitching alot since I have been sick and so I have a lot to post over there. Check back soon.

Please pray for me, I have some major character flaws and one of them is I have no patience! ;o) I want to be well NOW. But, God is faithful and completely trustworthy and it is so comforting to know that He is sovereign and that He is using all of this for my good and His glory!

Happy Birthday Elissa!

Today is our darling girl's 17th birthday! We are so thankful to the Lord for his blessing of such a daughter. I know her brothers are also very thankful for such a sister! Elissa is the sunshine in our home. We pray that Elissa will continue to walk closely with the Lord each day and continue to strive to be a Proverbs 31 woman.

We have had a blessed day so far. We surprised her this morning with the fact that her Daddy had the day off. I think that was her favorite gift! ;o) So far we have had a tea breakfast, opened gifts and lunch, we are off to watch one of the movies that she received this morning and then we are going to play games. Then her favorite dinner and cheesecake for dessert.

Birds & Bird Study

Here is our "feeding station". We have 6 feeders in this tree. I think you can see them all except a suet basket that blends in with the leaves. It is a little bit to the left and above the cement post on the left side of the tree. We offer the birds Niger seed, Finch mix, wild bird seed, Black Oil Sunflower seeds and three different kinds of suet blocks. We also have a Hummingbird Feeder and two bird baths.

This is our Black-throated Humming bird. We named him Fitzwilliam Darcy and his mate is Lizzie.

Here is their nest. It is in our feeder tree. Which is a male Mulberry tree. We found it last Friday evening. The eggs had already hatched. Hummingbirds use spiderwebs to build their nests and then they decorate it with feathers, moss, leaves, lichen, etc.

This is a view out of our family room window. Two House Finches are waiting out the rain. The tree that you see is actually in our neighbors yard. This is the tree that we saw the Peregrine Falcon in. He would hunt Dove from this tree. He needs to come back and thin out our Doves. ;o)

Painted Redstart ~ Sorry this is a blurry picture. We are still learning how to photograph birds.

This is a baby Gambel's Quail. We found him in our yard Friday evening. Our neighbor's cat was just about to have a snack! urgh! We named him Henry. Unfortunately Henry passed away. :o(

Seth LOVED Henry.

Here are our bird books. We enjoy reading and learning about birds. God's world is so amazing and fascinating. He is such a loving Father to bless us with such a wonderful creation.

We decided it would be a good time for Elissa to have some practical training in teaching little ones, so that she will have some experience when Lord willing she will have a family of her own to teach. So Elissa has been doing a Bird study with Seth. She is also doing a more advanced one of her own. She is doing a fabulous job of preparing and planning their studies. She has come up with some great activities. Seth is loving doing his study with Sissy.

Here is some of the books that they are using.

We are really enjoying our study of birds. They are so fascinating.

I am alive & Bird watching

Now wasn't that a clever title! ;o) I am sorry that I dropped off of the face of the earth. We got a nasty cold right after mother's day and when I was sick and coughing my lungs up, I pinched a nerve in my neck. I had a headache that was a killer for 2 1/2 weeks. It finally went away about 10 days ago, so I have been trying to catch up on everything since then. ;o)

Our family has always loved bird watching. We have seen some very neat birds over the years. Especially when we were stationed in the country of Panama. (We saw wild Toucans quite often). We have recently got back into bird watching. We started out with one feeder and just like potato chips, you can't have just one! ;o) So now we have 5 feeders, with plans to add a few more.

We have seen a lot of neat birds in our yard lately. I plan on sharing pictures in the next post, but I need my handy tech support to help me crop the pictures! ;o) I will leave you with a short list of a few of the birds we have seen lately. Some of these have been on our family adventures.
I am going to try to be better at posting! ;o)

New additions to my craft room

Here are a few of my mother's day gifts that I am using to decorate my craft room. A few weeks ago I was searching on Etsy for Pincushions and found a wonderful shop. Lonna makes the cutest items and her work and packaging are so beautiful. My family graciously bought me several items from her shop for Mother's day.

I have been wanting a shelf for a while and Steve built me one on Saturday. I painted it and he hung it for me yesterday. I love it!! I am a very spoiled momma! ;o)

PJ bought me the birds.

The dress form pincushion and Petit four pincushion are from Steve. The pink doily is one that I made recently. The little dish that is sitting on the doily has buttons in it. Some of them are vintage mother of pearl buttons.

What could be sweeter to a Momma, than to have all of her children home for Mother's Day?! My darling beloved flew our oldest son home for the weekend. We are having a wonderful time (except for when I was getting massacred at Settlers of Catan last night at 1 in the morning!) ;o). My loving family made me a lovely tea breakfast and showered me with wonderful gifts! I am so thankful that God has allowed me to be a Momma!I pray that y'all are having a very blessed Mother's day. May we always remember what precious treasures the Lord has entrusted into our care!

Exciting News and a giveaway!

Hi ladies!!
I have some exciting news to share. I had the opportunity to write a tutorial on one of my craft projects for Seasons at Home Magazine. One of the perks was a free magazine, so since I already have a subscription, I thought I would have a giveaway, so you can share in my excitement. ;o) I thought I would add a few things to the giveaway. I made a pouch and matching pincushion and there is a spring hand towel. On one of my yahoo groups we were talking about organizing books. I shared how I organize our books and I offered to share pictures. So here goes:

This shelf holds alot of our school stuff. There is dictionaries, poetry books, all of our history in chronological order, some mom type homeschooling books, our daily school books ( that is the 2nd shelf on the right), science, nature study and geography.

This shelf holds our fiction books in alphabetical order, some movies, some notebooks of the children and some audio books.

This shelf holds some commentaries, our Great books collection, theology, christian living, creation/evolution, gardening, self-reliant living books.

This shelf holds alot of my books, parenting, marriage, courtship, biographies, home decorating, seasonal, natural medicine, and scrapbooks.

This shelf is in our craft room/office and it holds all of our craft related books.

The children have their own shelves and their is a stack of books underneath and on top of my bedside table and my cookbooks are in the kitchen.

Thursday Tea Time ~Breakfast Tea

My new friend Emily has started hosting Thursday Tea Time, so I decided to join her this week. Head on over to her blog to see how you can participate.

Taking tea is one of my favorite things to do. I drink at least one cup of tea a day. My very favorite is Harney and Sons Paris Tea. This morning I decided to make a breakfast tea for my children. We had a pot of Paris tea and Blueberry Cream Scones with lemon curd and fresh whipped cream. I will share the recipe for the Blueberry Cream Scones at the end of my post. I hope that you will take the time to slow down and enjoy a lovely cup of tea.

Blueberry Cream Scones:

2 cups flour (I used unbleached)
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons cold butter
1 large egg, beaten
1 Tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (I used a little more)
1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries ( I used frozen)

Heavy whipping cream and sugar to brush on top.

Mix together in a large bowl the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Cut in butter with a pastry cutter until crumbly. Add the beaten egg, cream and vanilla. Combine until just mixed. Fold in the blueberries. The batter will turn slightly purple. Do not over mix. Knead by hand on floured surface for a minute or two and then pat it into a 6-8 inch circle on a parchment lined baking sheet. (I double my baking sheet, so that the bottom does not burn). Cut into wedges. Brush the top with heavy whipping cream and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve with lemon curd and fresh whipped cream.

Feast or Famine!

Steve always says that my blog updates are either feast or famine and he is right! I figured it was time to fill you in on what has been going on around here.

We have been busy finishing some of our home improvement projects. I finally finished Seth's room, well except for some touch up painting. We are trying to finish our main bathroom makeover. That has really kept us busy for the last while. Hopefully the bathroom will be finished soon and I can move on to painting the Living room and hallway.

We went to the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson with our home school group a few weeks ago. It was Seth's first time to go to a zoo. He loved it!!! The above picture is of him feeding the giraffe. He thought that was very neat. He said it tickled his hand. ;o) It was a great zoo. It wasn't very big, but you could really get up close to the animals. Seth ran a million miles that day and on the way home he actually fell asleep!

I have been re-reading all of Jane Austen's novels lately. I have finished Emma, Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion and I am about half way through Mansfield Park. I love her novels!

I have been very remiss in not posting the awards I received from my friend Sheri and from sweet Jessica! I am so sorry!!! Please forgive me!! I appreciate them very much! I will try to make my next post about them.

A family tea party

Welcome Spring

I have had several people ask about how my garden is doing, so I thought I would share a few pictures. Although yesterday was the first official day of Spring, we have had spring like weather here in our part of Arizona for quite some time. My garden has exploded in the last couple of weeks. All but a couple of flowers have come back from last year, even though some of them are not perennials. I still need to weed my rose garden (can we say jungle!) and Elissa's garden needs weeding too, so I won't be showing pictures of those yet. ;o) We have added Jeremy Fischer to our garden. He is over in Elissa's garden. We need to get him some friends besides the neighbors cats. ;o) I hope that y'all are enjoying spring like weather wherever you live. ;o)

This picture of Cockrobin was taken a couple of weeks ago, you can not even see him anymore. The Hollyhocks have covered him.

This bee loves to visit our garden. I was taking pictures of him and he started to fly toward me and I jumped and took the following picture at the same time. ;o)

Here is Jeremy Fischer. He seems to like his new home, although he is lonely. We are on the lookout for Peter Rabbit to join him. ;o)

My parsley plant has exploded. You can see one of the Puddleduck babies to the left of the plant.

Show & Tell ~ Beatrix Potter Tea Cups

This is my first time to be able to participate in my friend Kelli's show and tell. I LOVED show and tell when I was a little girl! It is so fun to be able to do this as a big girl! ;o)

My mom knows how much I love all things Beatrix Potter and near Christmas time she found 5 Beatrix Potter tea cups at Tuesday Morning. These were her gift to me. I was so thrilled! The extra one is a second Jemima Puddleduck. I have really enjoyed using them. In fact this morning I had a cup of tea in my Peter Rabbit cup.
